Use screen recorder while connected to hdmi output

Is there a way to use the iPhone screen recorder while the iPhone is plugged in to an hdmi connector? I am able to use the screen recorder just fine until I plug my phone in to the hdmi connector so that I can output to my large-screen tv. I would like to be able to do both at the same time.
