Photo transfer from PC to MacBook Pro

I have an older PC (Pentium processor, Windows OS) and I want to transfer a few hundred photos from it to my MacBook Pro (Core i7, macOS Sierra 10.12.6). I have a WD portable drive. I want to put the photo files on it then access them from the MacBook using either iPhoto version 9.6.1 or Adobe Bridge CS5 version 4.1.0.54.

My has two parts:

1. What format should the WD drive be to copy the files off the PC and be accessed from the MacBook?

2. What do you need to do to access them from iPhoto? I suspect the library file must change somehow.
