can 2012 13" MBP do 16 gb in one chip?

I have 2 different 2012 MBPs (one is a 9,1 and the other is a 9,2). Both were upgraded long ago to 16GB by using a kit of two 8GB SODIMMs. Now each one appears to have a failed memory slot. (And it appears to be the upper slot in one computer and the lower slot in the other computer.) Now I do know that if the slot fails on one of these MBPs it requires a motherboard replacement to fix it. So, before I settle for living with only 8GB of ram -- does anyone know if I can put a single 16GB chip into my one working slot and get 16GB of ram that way? I went to amazon and copied down the product descriptions for all of the size variations of this memory:

There are anecdotes that on some units, the SODIMM socket assembly was torqued onto the board too strongly at the factory. The thought was that this may have distorted the socket assembly, leading to unreliable operation.

Readers have reported that loosening that assembly and tightening it "just tight" with hand tools sometimes fixes reliability problems. As always, "your mileage may vary".
