I haven't used my first gen ipad for ages, but I want to fire it up for basic use. It is updated to latest possible software 5.1.1. I'd like to download apps occasionally. Why won't iCloud accept my login?

Difficult to say why as you haven't given any information. What happens when you try to login ? If you are getting an error message what does it say ? What have you tried to see if it fixes whatever is/isn't happening ?
When I attempt to login, it just sits there and did for an hour. No error message at all. Just doesn't let me login even though I know I am using the correct credentials. I haven't tried anything as I don't know what to try, hence my post.
Try closing the Settings app via the iPad's taskbar and doing a soft-reset/reboot
