Kernel Panic and Drive Issues

I have a mid-2015 15" Retina MBP with 16Gb RAM and 1Tb OWC Aura SSD, External LG monitor and High Sierra 10.13.3.

Of late I have been getting kernel panics saying that the system cannot read a SATA drive. I thought this was my Toshiba 2Tb USB 3 Time Machine drive so have removed it. I have the system in a Henge Vertical dock with a standard USB keyboard and mouse and USB HDD (at times).

Frustratingly, I have also been getting freezes. The scenario is always the same:

  1. The USB mouse stops working, the keyboard continues to work
  2. The keyboard eventually (after say 20-30 seconds) stops working
  3. If I add a Bluetooth mouse, t works for about 10 seconds and stops

In the interim, I have done the SMC/NVRAM resets and have reinstalled high sierra. This is sort of driving me crazy. I stopped using Chrome and am back to Safari.

One weird thing I noticed was that there are some leftover Virtualbox kernel extensions, yet there are no files/folders in the System\Library\Extensions folder so when I try to delete these, I get an error ..cannot create the folder.

MacBookPhysical:~ kevin$ kextstat | grep -v com.apple

If I try to delete the kext I get this error:

MacBookPhysical:~ kevin$ sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv

Password:

Can't create /System/Library/Extensions/org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv.

Which I suppose is correct since that path (and /Library/Extensions//org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv) does not exist. Since I am clutching at straws, I have read that kernel extensions that don't exist or fail can cause stability problems so how do I delete these virtualbox kernel extensions when there is no kext file/folder?

Thanks,

Kevin
