Kernel Panic caused by External HDD, help mounting safely?

Greetings Apple Community! I'm hoping for some quick help regarding some recent kernel panics I've been experiencing. I've read blogs and logs and other posts here in the community but no one has address this specific question yet.

So

a) I know where it's coming from. Most kernel panic help online is showing people where to find the source. I think I've found it. It's a peripheral device. A Seagate external Baracuda HDD to be exact. It worked flawlessly for about a month before these panics began. I've tried this drive in two separate HDD enclosures and in both, it causes a kernel panic. When taken out, the remaining peripherals do just fine and the computer is stable for hours, presumably forever.

b) I desperately NEED the data on the kernel panic'd drive and then I'll need to format it (I suppose)... Not a problem as a have back up drives BUT once the drive mounts, the kernel panic happens a mere 5-10 seconds after so there is NO TIME to to anything with the drive...

c) In summary, I need help #1 mounting the drive safely and stably & then #2 pulling off the data before reformatting it...
