Repeated kernel panics since High Sierra

I'm running a late-2013 27" iMac 3.4GHz. I added 16GB of after-market RAM (for a total of 24GB) about 8 months ago, which seemed to be a completely smooth upgrade. I had no problems whatsoever since installing the machine until upgrading to High Sierra. Since the OS upgrade I have experienced frequent kernel panics, and can reliably reproduce these without any running applications, simply by entering sleep mode or shutting down. In either case, kp occurs during the shutdown and leads to an immediate restart.

The panics started occurring about two weeks ago, at the same time I had a partition on a Western Digital external HDD become corrupted upon waking from sleep. The error message was 'Mac OS X cannot repair this disk'. As I write this, the lost data from that drive is being restored to a new Time Capsule using Stellar Phoenix running on my laptop.

I have reviewed similar topics here and tried uninstalling Sophos Antivirus, although from the panic report below it appears that the Sophos kexts have not been removed. Prior to High Sierra, Sophos would cause a noticeable performance slowdown when updating, but no other problems. I have also tried resetting SMC by unplugging, to no avail.

The panic reports are not all the identical, but the one below is representative and was triggered by shutdown. As usual, the backtrace implicates com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5701Ethernet although the dependencies vary.

That RAM isn't working. Remove it.

"Sophos" should also be removed as a matter of course. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.

So uninstalling Sophos is going to be a bit of a process. But in the meantime, I installed and ran Rember. The results are interesting. I have two factory-installed 4GB DIMMs and two after-market 8GBs. But Rember finds just shy of 15GB:

Mac OS X 10.13.3 (17D102) running in multiuser mode

Memory Page Size: 4096

System has 4 Intel core(s) with SSE

Requested memory: 14998MB (15727570944 bytes)

Available memory: 14998MB (15727570944 bytes)

Allocated memory: 14998MB (15727570944 bytes) at local address 0x0000000103ac8000

Attempting memory lock... locked successfully

Partitioning memory into 2 comparison buffers...

Buffer A: 7499MB (7863785472 bytes) starts at local address 0x0000000103ac8000

Buffer B: 7499MB (7863785472 bytes) starts at local address 0x00000002d8645800

I set it to run 255 loops, and it failed on the 5th:

Test sequence 5 of 255:

Running tests on full 14998MB region...

Linear PRN : setting 1 of 16 ok

Running comparison tests using 7499MB buffers...

Is there any harm is attempting to re-seat the DIMMs before ordering new ones?

Mar 20, 2018 2:59 PM in response to kleinemark

You're fortunate that Rember identified a fault, because it is literally impossible to evaluate memory for specification compliance with software running on the same machine on which it's installed. In other words it could pass "Rember" all day, every day, and mean absolutely nothing. Same goes for Apple Diagnostics / AHT. A specific failure is definitely conclusive though.

None at all. You might as well try it, but bear that limitation in mind. I don't know of any aftermarket memory that doesn't have a lifetime guarantee, so the first indication of a failure is all the justification required to return or exchange it.
