I had several times already an issue about the phone icon that's faded.
When it's faded, I cannot receive any calls. It remains so until I have pushed the phone icon myself.
It appears without any warning, and I'm pretty sure that I haven't done anything to launch this issue.
It looks a bit similar to an app being updated in background, but I can't imagine it's being updated like that...

Have you already tried a forced restart of your iP8?
Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo. When it appears, release the Side button, wait for your iPhone to restart then test it for a while.
If the issue still persists, contact your carrier explaining your problem, and ask them if they have a software update to be installed.
