How can I connect Rode videomic go to mac for iMovie recording?

I recently just bought a rode videomic go to do some podcasting recording for iMovie. I've tried connecting it to the headphone jack of my mac laptop (macbook pro 2014) and I couldn't get the computer to recognize it.

In system preferences it only shows the internal mic to be the only recognized device for audio input. I've looked around and saw that some of the people who purchased this mic to record on an ipad or iphone also purchased the SC7 cable for the audio jack to be compatible.

I don't know much about the audio jack of my macbook pro and was looking for some advice as to if purchasing the SC7 cable would also be the right cable to use for my macbook pro.

Any advice on getting the mic to connect would be greatly appreciated. : )
