The command to paste into a new file from clipboard stays greyed out no matter what I do and I can not use my good old trick anymore. I have no clue why

SGIII suggested, and I can confirm, that you can copy to the clipboard then switch to Preview. Then select the menu item "File > New From Clipboard…"

Perhaps you did not perform the copy first? Also, make sure you are up-to-date. I was using mac OS X 10.13.3 and Numbers 4.3.1

I believe you about the grey out! I also believe, as posted above, that "paste" and "insert" don't exist in Preview, and never did. You can still do what you always did: make a selection in Numbers (or another app), command-c to copy something to the system clipboard, then with Preview open go to File > New From Clipboard. Or simply type command-n.

If 'New from Clipboard' is greyed out then that may be because you don't actually have anything on the clipboard. Either your copy operation from Numbers wasn't successful or you perhaps have some third party clipboard management software on your machine that interferes with the copy.

Note that the 'New from Clipboard' in Preview is not specific to Numbers. It works with lots of apps on the Mac.

I find it easier to use Preview rather than copy into a separate Numbers sheet and print that, because that way I don't have to worry about formula references. Also there's no cleanup needed afterward deleting the extra sheet; just quit Preview. Using Preview really does take just a few seconds.

Hi Prof'

You can also select the whole Table by clicking any cell, then clicking the circle at the intersection of the row of column reference tabs and the column of row reference tabs off the top left corner of the table.

Or you can select the whole Table by clicking away from the table, keeping the mouse button down and dragging a selection rectangle that encloses (or touches) the table.

One click on B2, now click circle (red arrow).

Since High Sierra, the trick to print only a selection of cells by copying them to the clipboard and pasting them to Apple Preview does not work any more.

I have a new solution: I created an empty Numbers file with one single cell only by deleting all other cells from a new blank file. Then I stored this file as a template under the name of "print template.numbers".

Now if I want to print a selection of cells in numbers only, I mark all these cells, copy them to the clipboard, switch to my template file with the one single cell only and paste my selection of cells to this one single cell.

Numbers creates the required amount of new cells on paste automatically and also sizes them correctly to the size of the cells I copied from my other file.

Now I use the command "Print..." from the file menu, which puts me to the print preview window of Numbers. Here the size fits one print page automatically and I can advance in order to only print my selection of cells using the print command in the lower right corner. If desired, the selection of my cells can be resized in the print preview, much like it works when printing a selection of cells in MS Excel.

It is is one step more, as compared to MS Excel, but it works. Problem solved... :-)

What I do in High Sierra (as in previous versions of the OS) is select the cells in Numbers that I want to print, type control-c to copy to the clipboard, then in Preview choose File > New from Clipboard from the menu, and print the result. Quick and easy.

Hi SGIII,

as I mentioned earlier, I know the trick via clipboard and pasting to Preview. I have been using it for years in fact.

Just with my new MacBook Pro and the latest version of High Sierra it would not work anymore.

The command to paste into a new file from clipboard stays greyed out no matter what I do and I can not use my good old trick anymore. I have no clue why.

That is why I figuered out this new trick.

@ Apple developer team for Numbers: Guys, how about adding the function to print a selection of cells only as a standard function to Numbers ? My birthday is in September. Do I get this as a birthday present from you ?

It seems likely that your muscle memory shifted when you moved to the new OS.

In Preview use File > New from Clipboard.

That's what it was. That's what it still is. And it's quick and easy!

This is a user-to-user support community, sponsored by Apple, but not staffed by Apple. Other than the hosts and 'community specialists' tasked with monitoring the communities for 'bad behaviour' (straying from the terms of use) and providing boiler plate responses (usually with links to knowledge base articles) to questions that haven't received community responses, Apple employees and Apple developers don't participate in these discussions (or read them).

If you want to make a feature enhancement request, launch Numbers, go to the Numbers menu, and choose Provide Numbers Feedback.

SG,

it makes no sense to tell me what I already know.

I am using the Mac since 1990.

If I say, the command in Preview to insert from clipboard stays greyed out, than it is the case. Believe me.

Of course I have copied the cells before in Numbers with the copy command.

Just like I did it for many years before.

Just it doesn't work anymore for me.

Hi Ian,

nice tipp.

Works fine and saves my step to have a special file ready with one single cell to paste in.

It took me a little moment to find out that I have to click in the background first in order to be able to select the complete spreadsheet with Command-A and then be able to completely delete it so I stay with an all blank window to paste into.
