I tried the Apple support suggestion to double click on AVCHD file to open in Quicktime but nothing happened. Even tried to right click. open with and got a message "operation could not be performed". I have Quicktime Player 10.4 on High Sierra 10.13.1> the footage came from a Sony a7sii camera. Any suggestions?

Do you have a third-party independent A52/AC3 codec or the Perian codec package installed and active on your system? If so be advised that they create a conflict with High Sierra's own built-in AC3 codec. If such software is installed on your system, either uninstall it or turn it off and reboot your system to reinitialize QTX/QL codec lists. While this should fix the QL/QTX Player's ability to open/play AVCHD (AVC/AC3) content, it may/may not change how the AVCHD media files are accessed—depending on how the content was imported/copied to your system.
