How to Fix TextEdit Loading Bug

Lately I've been having a problem with text edit. When I go to open up a document it takes a moment for all the words to load. And so generally speaking if I don't want to wait I have to scroll through and find the 'holes' so to speak in the document and move my cursor over them to retrieve the hidden words. To clarify, the 'holes' aren't holes at all, but moreso breaks within the text, lines that are only slightly visible as they often cover just the tips of words. So basically, there are paragraphs that are close to each other, that should be separated by any number of paragraphs, but instead are separated by what is like a fold in the text, made visible only because of a line over any give line. Anybody know what's going on here?
