So my kitten really loves to walk/lay on my (MacBook Air) key board and recently he pressed some buttons and now my "function" keys (I think) are no longer working normally. For example, I can't change the screen/keyboard brightness or volume using the regular keys. When I hit them they either perform different functions or it makes a sound. How do I change it back to normal?

There's a couple of things:
System Preferences > Keyboard > Untick "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" > Shortcuts > Restore Defaults
Reset the SMC if the previous doesn’t fix it.

Try this...
Open System Preferences > Keyboard then click: Modifier Keys
Then click: Restore Defaults.
As soon as I unticked the "use F1, F2, etc keys as standard..." box it went back to normal! Thanks for the help!!
