Does the "read receipts" function sync between iPhone and other devices?

I used to be able to turn read receipts 'on' for my iPhone and 'off' for my Mac but now it seems I must choose one of the other and it syncs to both devices. I can still turn them 'on'/'off' for individual conversations but that decision syncs between devices as well. Is there a way to do this separately without signing out of iMessage on my Mac?
