In the support document that you linked to the forum with, there is a section for connecting to a non-Apple device. Follow those instructions. There are links in the last step you may also look at.

Thanks for using Apple Communities.
For using AirPods is required an Apple device, since it's only comptible with iOS 10 or later, Mac OS Sierra or later and Watch OS 3 or later.

Untrue. Airpods use standard Bluetooth profiles, and will connect to any Bluetooth device that supports the A2DP profile. See ChrisJ's reply above yours.
