iTunes could not connect to this iPod touch. The value is missing.

I need to reset my ipod that I had given to my mom and she hasn't used it for over 2 years,

it's been disabled. I've initiated restore process however, it shows an error message

"iTunes could not connect to this iPod touch. The value is missing."

What does this mean?
