I just got a new iPhone 7 and from 3rd party apps like WhatsApp of Instagram I can’t access my contacts or photos. I tried going through privacy settings for WhatsApp, Instagram, contacts, photos etc. But haven’t found anything. I think in the setup I must have said “skip” at a step where I allowed apps to do that. What do I do from here to fix it?

Settings/Whatsapp. Turn on the Contacts switch. Likewise for Instagram. You will be prompted to allow them, and you will have to enter your passcode.
If I can add my two cents to what Lawrence Finch has correctly suggested... I would check if you have restrictions enabled.
Settings>General>Restrictions>...scroll down to Contacts>Allow modifications
and
Settings>General>Restrictions>...scroll down to Photos>Allow modifications

Try deleting WhatsApp, restarting your phone, then downloading it again.
If on restrictions you have scrolled deep down to Contacts, then to Photos, and they are both on "allow modifications", then please forgive my intrusion. It was just an attempt.

Do you have a company MS Exchange email account on your phone? If you do, your administrator can place restrictions on access to your contacts (and many other functions).
I don’t have a contacts switch in settings>>WhatsApp. Likewise if I go settings>>privacy>>contacts “applications which have requested access to your contacts will appear here” is blank. :(
Have you launched WhatsApp and logged in to it? Apps don't show up in Settings until they have been used.
Yep, and I can send and receive messages as normal. Crazy that it thinks not one app has requested access to my contacts!

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried and still have nothing. At this point I’m thinking backup and reset the phone?
