So my wife has an iPhone 8, iOS 11.2.6 and started receiving some of her text messages (non-iMessage) as something different. 1- it appears as a grey box with the header SMS Message.
2 - Message always starts with (phone number): then the body is the message.
3 - The screen is all black on the phone, no matter which application you are using.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? This has been going on for days now.

You should report them to your carrier. Someone is misusing Flash SMS.
A Flash SMS is a type of SMS that appears directly on the main screen without user interaction and is not automatically stored in the inbox. It can be useful in emergencies, such as a fire alarm or cases of confidentiality, as in delivering one-time passwords.
