The Mac pro dark cylinder?

or a MacBook Pro notebook computer? what screen size?

The drive cannot be detected until it is ERASED and given a new partition Map and Mac OS Extended (journaled) Volume. Disk Utility is the applications that bridges the world between raw devices and Macintosh Volumes.

If you removed the old drive to install the new one, you will need a STANDARD Internet connection to make any progress. No login page or other wonky stuff to get right onto the Internet.

Hold Command-Option-R at startup. If your Internet connection is normal, you will see a spinning globe, and will eventually be able to choose Disk Utility off a list of Utilities.

Yes it is the mac pro black cylinder I was using a mavericks install dvd and what I found was the disk utility in the top bar. Then I clicked on it and selected the drive and erased it then the install dvd found the hard drive so I worked it out in the end but thanks. It seems the price difference between the 256gb and 512gb is not to big but the difference between the 512gb and 1TB is really huge.
