Hi, I'm trying to format and do a clean install on a 2012 MacBook Pro currently running Yosemite with a SSD. I've erased the HD but should i also erase the OS X base system before exiting DU? Can I then install a fresh OS such as High Sierra? Thanks

There is no need to erase The Base System. A new installation will over write it.

No issue, just wanted to format & sell it but with an updated OS
Why do you think it is necessary for you to do a so called "clean" install on your MBP?
What problems are you having with it?
Unless you are having serious problems with it I suggest you simple install High Sierra.
