Exclamation mark on photos in iPhoto on mac

All of my photos taken with my iPhone, that have copied to my mac for the last two months will not open. There is a thumbnail with the photo, but when I try to open it there is an exclamation mark. I am unable to right click or do anything with it. Screenshots seem to be ok. All photos prior to two months ago seem to be ok.

Are you using iPhoto or Photos for Mac?

What is the format of the photos you imported from your iPhone? If the iPhone is running iOS 11, the photos may be in the new space saving HEIC format. In that case you need a Mac with macOS 10.13 High Sierra to be able to process the photos in HEIC format or set the iPhone to use a most compatible format.
