High Sierra Time machine / time capsule backup fails requiring new backup

Since upgrading my mid-2013 MacBook Air to High Sierra, I have had continual problems with Time Machine backing up to my Time Capsule. I have wiped the Time Capsule disk multiple times and started over the back up several times. Shortly after the first backup completes, I get the error message saying the backup has failed verification and a new backup needs to created. The MacBook Air has a 512GB SSD.

The most weird symptiom is that if I keep the MacBook Air on a hardwired ethernet connection to the Time Capsule the backup keeps running fine but if I remove the ethernet connection and switch back to wireless the backups fail with the verification message within a day. Note: I am typically running the “first backup” with the hardwire each time I have started over and have tried once doing the first backup over wireless and had same result.

To rule out the Time Capsule, I have another older MacBook Air with a smaller 128GB SSD running error-free to same Time Capsule and I am able to run a full Super Duper clone to same TC without issue.

I suspect a High Sierra issue, so hoping someone can share any resolution if you have had similar issues.

Sorry, ran out of time ...

As far as some things you can try if you still wish to continue using a Time Capsule (TC) for Time Machine (TM) backups are:

  1. Temporarily disable any AV, security, or adware apps running on your MacBook Air (MBA).
  2. If your TC is NOT the "main" router in your current network configuration, re-configure the TC with a static local IP address. By default, the TC gets a dynamic IP address from the upstream router's DHCP service.
  3. Configure both your MBA and the TC to use IPv6 Link-local only.
  4. Finally, if your TC's base station name contains spaces or special characters, remove them. Try to use a name that is 16-alphanumeric characters or less, and again, does not include spaces or special characters.

You're suspicions may be correct. We see numerous posts here related to Time Machine backup issues to a Time Capsule, actually since the release of macOS Sierra. They haven't gone away with High Sierra. These issues are anything from lost connectivity to the Time Capsule, to missing or corrupted Time Machine backups. Interestingly, these same types of issues do not seem to manifest themselves with backups to local drives or to dedicated NAS devices that support Time Machine.

A few of us have been recommending that users stop using the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups. Instead we have been suggesting that you perform these backups to a local drive. In addition, we also recommend that you use a third-party solution, like Carbon Copy Cloner, to make backups ... even to a Time Capsule ... at least, until Apple has recognized this to be an issue and offers a resolution.
