I just signed up for Apple Music ( How does this work with Airplay or Airplay 2) (or better yet, what is Airplay's function here)
Apple Music, of course, is a music subscription service similar to the many others available today, like Spotify. AirPlay and AirPlay 2 are streaming protocols that run over wired or wireless networks. It's Apple's propriety method of getting music from a host device to a "speaker."
AirPlay requires three things:
- An Airplay "server." This is typically iTunes running on a Mac, PC, or iOS device. In this case, your Apple Music subscription, would be the source of the music that you would stream from iTunes.
- An AirPlay "speaker." This can be an AirPort Express base station, an Apple TV, or a third-party AirPlay-enabled device (AVR, speaker, etc.)
- A wired or wireless network to connect the above two items.
Your new Bose outdoor speaker system includes a SoundTouch amplifier and relies on a SoundTouch app that runs on an iOS or Android device. It does not appear that it relies on AirPlay or AirPlay 2 for streaming. According to Bose, the app allows you to stream from a music library stored on a computer or NAS device. If that's the case, this could be your iTunes Library with Apple Music as the source.
