I would like a good set of Wi-Fi outdoor speakers for use with my apple music subscription, in addition I would like to know the system set up as well.

I would like to get a good set of outdoor Wi-Fi speakers that I can play apple music through. I do not want Bluetooth speakers... I would also like to understand what the system setup would look like... ie,. Speakers, Amp, IOS device, and possible connections...

Since we have no idea what your home and adjacent outdoor environment consists of it would be difficult to offer you any suggestions ... except that you should consider hiring a whole-home audio consultant. If nothing else, have them work with your desired goals and let them offer their solution(s) that meet your price point.

For example, your basic system could consist of a main Audio-Video Receiver (AVR) that supports AirPlay. In turn the AVR would directly connect to multiple speakers both inside and outside your home. There are numerous outdoor speaker types, including ones that look like rocks, to choose from. If want them to be wireless, but not Bluetooth, then your home's Wi-Fi system may require additional Wireless Access Points (WAP) outside to provide wireless coverage for the speakers.

I just signed up for Apple Music ( How does this work with Airplay or Airplay 2) (or better yet, what is Airplay's function here)

Apple Music, of course, is a music subscription service similar to the many others available today, like Spotify. AirPlay and AirPlay 2 are streaming protocols that run over wired or wireless networks. It's Apple's propriety method of getting music from a host device to a "speaker."

AirPlay requires three things:

  1. An Airplay "server." This is typically iTunes running on a Mac, PC, or iOS device. In this case, your Apple Music subscription, would be the source of the music that you would stream from iTunes.
  2. An AirPlay "speaker." This can be an AirPort Express base station, an Apple TV, or a third-party AirPlay-enabled device (AVR, speaker, etc.)
  3. A wired or wireless network to connect the above two items.

Your new Bose outdoor speaker system includes a SoundTouch amplifier and relies on a SoundTouch app that runs on an iOS or Android device. It does not appear that it relies on AirPlay or AirPlay 2 for streaming. According to Bose, the app allows you to stream from a music library stored on a computer or NAS device. If that's the case, this could be your iTunes Library with Apple Music as the source.

FWIW. At a previous home, I had a whole-home system that included wired outdoor speakers. These were fed from a combination Denon AVR & dedicated amp. Connected to the AVR (it pre-dated being AirPlay-enabled), was an AirPort Express base station. With this setup, I could stream anything from iTunes from my Macs, PCs, or iOS devices to the Express and have the audio go through the AVR to the speakers. Today's Denons (and others) are AirPlay-enabled and an Express would not be necessary.

Getting closer....

Lets keep this system completely separate from my home theater system.

In the past I used my iPhone connected to a BT speaker to play my iTunes library songs. Now I would like to use outdoor speakers such as the Bose 251 system, which has Wi-Fi speakers... (They will be well with in range of my home Wi-Fi) and a Bose amplifier to drive the speakers.

I just signed up for Apple Music ( How does this work with Airplay or Airplay 2) (or better yet, what is Airplay's function here) Can I connect apple music to this system? If not can you suggest a compatible system that works better with apple products? Ideally I would like to command this through Siri and apple home kit but I can't find any speaker for outdoors...

Thanks for the reply...
