Is there a way to diagnose exactly why my system hangs?

I have a 2015 Retina MacBook Pro running 10.13.3. Three times this week, my system has totally locked up while performing mundane tasks. These range from playing/downloading tracks in iTunes, to browsing on Safari, and while performing miscellaneous operations in the Finder. I can't remember the specific system load each time it crashed. The first time, the machine totally froze and I needed to reboot it manually. The second time, it rebooted on it's own after about 30-60 seconds. The third time, it unfroze within a matter of 15 seconds.

Is there any way I can determine the cause of these freezes by the time each one occurred? I'm worried it could be hardware-related, and AppleCare is expiring soon.

I’m not seeing anything suspicious in the report, so at this point I’m not sure whether it’s a software or hardware issue.

Try these steps:

1. Run Apple Diagnostics on your Mac to determine if any hardware issues exist. This can be done by holding down the D key while you turn on or restart your Mac. It is normal for your fan to run at high speeds during the test. At the end of the test, any errors will be shown onscreen.

2. Boot your Mac in Safe Mode. This can be done by holding down Shift while you turn on or restart your Mac. Startup will take considerably longer than normal, since your Mac will be performing multiple checks (and repairs, if necessary) while it starts up. Only required resources will be loaded, no apps or processes will be permitted to start automatically. If no errors occur while in Safe Mode, it’s definitely a software issue. To leave Safe Mode, restart your Mac normally.

3. Run First Aid on your Mac. This will check your Mac’s SSD for any errors and will repair the file system if necessary. Boot Recovery Mode by holding down Command-R while you turn on or restart your Mac. Release the keys when the Apple logo and a progress bar appear. When the Utilities menu appears, choose Disk Utility, then select Macintosh HD. Click on Mount, then enter your login password. Once you’ve unlocked your startup disk, click on First Aid. Your Mac will proceed to examine your startup disk for any errors. If all goes well, and First Aid reports that it was successful, quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. Do not erase or reformat Macintosh HD, as that will irreversibly destroy all of your data.
