Unable to remove old Bootcamp Windows partition...

Hi,

I'm in dire need of help... I'd consider myself to be very good with computers, have written thousands of lines of code, but this has me beat...

Recently I decided that I wanted to reinstall Windows on my Bootcamp partition. I booted up the installation media and got to the part where I chose the disk that I wanted to install Windows on. I selected my Bootcamp partition and hit "delete" to try and remove the data from the old version of Windows. However, this would not let me delete this partition. I therefore went to the recovery partition and formatted the drive to FAT from there, in the hopes that this would solve my issues... No luck, Windows would install, but would never boot up. I always got the issue of the blinking underscore, booting would never get past this stage.

So, I went back to the recovery partition and formatted the partition again. Next, I selected the whole drive for my Mac, selected partition and tried to remove the Bootcamp partition using the minus button... I hit apply, and the process fails. More info shows that 'Unable to unmount drive'.

No matter what I try, I just can't seem to get rid of this partition... I'm able to shrink it down to around 10GB, but never fully remove it... Plus, if I shrink it, the Mac OS partition doesn't grow any larger... Disk Utility just creates a new partition called Untitled, rather than increasing the size of the Mac OS partition.

I've spent a couple of hours playing around with different options, but nothing seems to work. I'm now in the process of reinstalling Mac OS X in order to try and fix this issue... I'm hoping with a fresh install, the drive might be more happy about changing the partition size... It's a long shot, and I really doubt it'll work, but may as well give it a try.

So, long story short, this partition refuses to be removed. If anyone has any ideas about why this is, or how to fix it, please let me know, I'm at a complete loss with this...

Thanks

diskutil info returns the following:

Device Identifier: disk0s2 Device Node: /dev/disk0s2 - Pastebin.com

(Apple forums wouldn't let me paste the raw text from that, due to 'invalid characters'...)

It's worth mentioning that I was just able to remove the partition however, using the fresh install of OS X... Not sure how, or why that worked, but it removed it and grew the Mac OS partition. Running first aid revealed that there was some corruptions on the disk, so I ran first aid in recovery, and this seemed to fix it... Just going to check the health of the disk with a couple of other apps, and if all goes well, I should be back to normal...

Entering that into the Terminal returns this:

  1. /dev/disk0 (internal, physical):
  2. #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
  3. 0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk0
  4. 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
  5. 2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 399.3 GB disk0s2
  6. 3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
  7. 4: Apple_HFS ii 599.3 GB disk0s4
  8. 5: Apple_Boot 650.0 MB disk0s5

Not sure if that's any use, but here you go.
