Have Macintosh HD Folder in Trash

I have bunch or weird folders in trash like 2017-04-11-013647. They have sub-folders of Macintosh HD. When I try to empty trash, I'm told that these folders are in use. I've tried First Aid from repair mode and regular mode with no change. How do I fix this?

Thanks for replying, danbaumbach, and that additional info, it really helps! Since you're still having this issue, you can make a backup of your personal data and put a fresh copy of macOS on your Mac using OS X Recovery mode, as that will overwrite these system files causing the issue.

Now I know what happened. Normally when a time machine drive is full, it erases old backups. However I just kept getting errors that it couldn't preform a backup. I delete some backup files and I was able to do a backup. However it seems I broke things. It doesn't complain about not being able to back ups, but I can't "Enter Time Machine".

I'll replace the disk. Luckily, the other external disk is also for backups.

Hello danbaumbach,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are experiencing issues with files in the Trash on your Mac, and you're not able to empty the trash even after trying First Aid in the Disk Utility app. Next, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

Cheers!
