How can I get serial number for iPad?

iPad was stolen recently. Hadn't even turned it on yet so I never signed in. It was a gift and was stolen with the box. Person who gave it to me bought in store and doesn't have receipt. I'm guessing it's a long shot but is there any way to get the serial number for detective and for insurance claim? TIA

If the device had not been activated and the box was stolen, the only hope is for the person that purchased it to get a duplicate receipt from where it was purchased. There is no other way to track or find that information.
