App icons are missing on two computers. *BUG

This happens every once in a while with High Sierra. What's exceptionally weird to me right now is that both my iMac and MacBook Pro have lost their app icons at the same time. I have a 2017 iMac and a 2014 MacBook Pro sitting on my desk - both on MacOS 10.13.3. Almost at the same time the dock icons have changed in to the generic app icon of the white square with ruler / pencil shaped A.

I read a few solutions online and ultimately deleted com.apple.dock.plist to resolve the issue. Unfortunately this resets my dock and launchpad preferences.

Because this happens probably once a month, I'm finding this to be a really annoying issue with High Sierra that should be resolved asap.

macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

If it only happens in the Dock then resetting the Dock should solve it. If however, it is also happening in your Applications folder, then it may be corruption in the LaunchServices database.

Launch Terminal Triple click anywhere on the following line to copy entire line then at the prompt copy & paste this command: Then press return. Wait for the cursor to return to the command line.

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain u -domain s -domain l -v
