Logic X 10.4.1 - Random White Noise Blast
***Before I dive into this question, please know that I have researched all the previous threads on this that I could find
(Loud static randomly; Huge Blasts of White Noise, urgent help needed; Re: Extremely loud noise when starting) and have not found any of the many suggestions to be of any help. Furthermore, I have also attempted to search the non-Apple forums, also to little avail.***
The reason that I am re-opening this topic is that it seems that what may have been missing from the previous posts is truly thorough documentation of the specifics surrounding the issue. I'll begin with my configuration:
Hardware:
- Computer
- Mid 2012 Mac Pro (MacPro5,1 - A1289 - 2629)
- 3.46 GHz 12 Core Intel Xeon
- 64GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM (8 x 8GB)
- ATI Radeon 5770 1GB (Graphics Card; Connected to Monitor via DVI-D)
- iConnectivity MIDI 4 (for Live Redundancy Purposes)
- I/O
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (Connected via FireWire 800)
- Audio Monitors
KRK Rokit 8 (Connected via 1/4" M/M to Saffire Pro 40)
- Visual Monitor
Dell 3007WFP 30" LCD
- Midi Keyboard
Komplete Kontrol S49 MK2
Software:
- OS
High Sierra 10.13.3
- Logic
Logic Pro 10.4.1
- Plugins
Too Many to Mention - All Current Versions
- Mixer
Saffire Mix Control 3.7
Now that all of that is out of the way, down to the problem: the random blasts of white noise during playback.
As noted in other threads, there is no definite pattern to this issue, but it appears to be related, somehow, to an oncoming processor thread spike. (For example: going into a new part of the song, where there are many new instruments/parts being introduced.) It seems like the processor is gearing up for the changes, which seems to correlate to the white noise blasts. This has now happened on 100% of the Logic Projects I have worked on (~5-7 projects.) (For testing purposes, these same Logic Projects have been played on my old iMac, where 0% had the white noise blast.)
***It is worth noting that I have recently upgraded to this current computer from an older iMac. Upon upgrade, I did a backup from the iMac, which I ultimately ended up putting on the Mac Pro.***
With all of that said, I have some theories as to what might be happening as well as the next steps I will be taking. I will follow up in this thread with the results of those steps.
What Has Been Tried So Far:
- Update all system software to current versions (Including OSx; Logic; Mix Control; all plugins)
- Changing physical FireWire ports (the Mac Pro has 4; all have been tried)
- Soft/Hard system restarts
- Reset SMC
What Will Be Tried Next:
- Complete removal/reinstall of Logic (theory: settings files may have been leftover from my system upgrade. the reinstall should completely wipe any such leftovers then become specific to my current system.)
- Reset PRAM/NVRAM
- Inspecting/replacing power supply (theory: (weak theory) when the system is spooling up to multi-thread a new part, the system becomes under-powered.)
- Complete system restore (last resort) (theory: see first point in this section, only expanding to a system-wide level, as opposed to a logic-specific level.)
Here is my (hopefully) ehxaustive overview of this issue. Please feel free to add your theories or your shared "white noise blast" experiences. From my searches, it appears that this issue was very common in earlier Logic/OSx builds, but not as much lately. I wonder if that is true, or if this community just got tired of trying.
Thank you all!
