why is my dock on my ipone X no longer transparent?
It’s greyed out. I ha e an up to date iPhone X and I know the dock is supposed to be semi transparent
Perhaps because your iPhone isn't up to date ...

Mine looks like this. (I made this black&white so it would fit in the post - the color version is too large.)
I believe this is exactly how the iPhone X home screen should appear.
Right, but aren’t you supposed to see a little of the background coming through it? Mine is just straight gray.
Nope. Mine is exactly as sberman posted and I don't believe the dock is supposed to have any transparency.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast > Reduct Transparency. Turn it off if it is on. Same with Darken Colors. My dock is semi-transparent gray.
