Kernel task high CPU usage

Hello Apple Community,

I'm struggling with kernel_task process consuming 599%, making my Macbook Pro impossible to use. I've done some research on the topic and tried several ways to solve the problem, but none of them worked.

Symptoms:

- computer is extremely slow,

- fan is working very on high revs, very loud,

- kernel task consuming 400-600% of CPU.

What I've tried:

- reboot - didn't change anything,

- SMC reset - didn't change anything,

- NVRAM reset - didn't change anything,

- reboot in safe mode - it's almost impossible to check anything in the safe mode because the computer is working even slowlier than in the normal mode,

- removing the file from IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext - finally haven't done that since there is no file reflecting my model identifier.

Please find below the EtreCheck report. I would really appreciate your help with solving the problem - I didn't expect that a cutting edge, 3 year old computer would work this way.

Thank you in advance!

Peter

I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files. Most long time posters recommend not using antivirus software or cleaning software such as CleanMyMac.

If that's still happening, yet the Mac does not appear to be excessively warm, and the SMC Reset didn't resolve it, then the most likely cause is a failed or disconnected thermal sensor. Apple Diagnostics will readily identify an inoperative thermal sensor: How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac - Apple Support.

For what it's worth I don't advocate blowing forced air into equipment, which can only result in contaminants being forced into places you don't want them to go and making them even harder to dislodge. You're better off using a vacuum (preferably, one designed for the task) to remove dust and other contaminants. The ideal solution requires opening the case, which isn't something inexperienced people ought to do, but an Apple Store can accomplish for a reasonable fee. They will also be able to provide you with a definitive diagnosis, probably at no fee.

Mar 31, 2018 7:05 AM in response to John Galt

Thank you for replying, John.

- I'm aware that the temperature sensor might be a cause of a problem. Is there anyway to disable or test the sensor? My Mac is really cool so I don't think it needs running the fans on maximum revs.

- Cooling system inefficiency is a cause I also consider - the issue happened a couple of hours after I had cleaned my MAC, including blowing air into ventilation holes, USB ports etc. However, the Mac is cool all the time so I don't really suspect that something has got stuck in the ventilation holes etc.

- I use the original Apple battery and it's in a relatively good condition so I don't think that's a problem.

- I have disconnected all external devices and rebooted the computer a couple of times but the problem persists.

I have already conducted the SMC reset and it hasn't changed anything.

Apr 2, 2018 5:32 PM in response to John Galt

John, thank you for your suggestion.

Yes the Mac is not warm at all and the problem persists. I tried the Apple Diagnostics according to your advice. There were two results of this procedure:

- there might have been a problem with SMC,

- there might have been a problem with power management.

Therefore I've reset the SMC once again without any success. I'm far away from any possible computer service since I'm sailing, so I'm entirely on my own and I need to sort this failure out as I can't use my Mac at all.

I would be extremely grateful for any other suggestions.

Best wishes,

Piotr

About the only thing worse than a failed or disconnected thermal sensor would be a failure of the SMC itself. I'm afraid Apple Diagnostics has identified it as the likely cause.

The SMC is responsible for a variety of functions designed to protect the Mac's hardware. It functions autonomously so that neither ill-behaved software nor external hindrances to heat dissipation can result in any permanent hardware damage. When that fundamental low-level protection fails, you're dead in the water. With no option to have it repaired at present, I think that's where you are: stuck.

The defective hardware needs to be identified and replaced. I wish I had better news for you.

Read If kernel_task is using a large percentage of your Mac CPU - Apple Support.

A runaway kernel_task can be due to a number of factors, such as:

  • a failed or disconnected temperature sensor
  • cooling system inefficiency (an inoperative exhaust fan on Macs so equipped, possibly clogged with dust, including the heat sink)
  • a worn out, missing, or non-Apple (user-installed) battery on portable Macs
  • similar hardware-specific causes including internal hardware additions or modifications, external USB and other connected devices, or the driver software required to use them.

Each of those possible causes is equally important and requires its own investigation.

If you can find no other explanation for its behavior, an SMC Reset is justified: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.

Like all non-Apple "anti-virus" garbage, "Avast" is worthless. Remove it. That Mac is also running a torrent client as well as a bunch of other dubious stuff. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.
