Updated an hour ago to the latest Mac OS 10.13.4 and am now unable to login to Messages. I can still login to my Apple ID etc. so it appears to be an issue confined to the Messages app.

Same thing for me. This is also true with FaceTime. I had problems with Messages syncing with my iPhone. This has happened before after an update and signing out and back in usually fixes it. I signed out but couldn't sign back in. I get "An error occurred during authentication."
Thank you for your suggestion. I was, in fact, able to log in after protracted attempts and reboots of the computer. (I had also logged in on my phone - have no idea if this was a factor).
