iMessage, how to add contact to iMessage ?

I am trying to send an iMessage to an existing contact, my son, and get a note: red circle with exclamation point, contact is invalid in iMessage. He is in my contacts list, he recently changed phone #, I edited that to new phone #, still invalid, do not know what to do next.

Thanks, Gilbert

Hey GilbertColomy,

I’m happy to hear that worked for you and you’re back to using iMessage again. I can help further with adding new contacts. Here’s the two ways that you can add a new contact, which you can do either through your Mac or iOS device. Check them out below.

Here’s how to add someone to your Contacts app on the Mac: Create contacts - Contacts Help

Here’s how to do it on your iOS device: Manage contacts - iPhone User Guide

Once you’ve added a contact to your Contacts app, then you can start a new message with that contact. Here’s the steps to start a new message using your Mac: Use Messages with your Mac - Apple Support

While the specific steps for this are under “Have a conversation”, the link has some other great information about using Messages on the Mac!

If you’re looking to start a new message from a contact on your iPhone here’s the steps at the top of the page: Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Have a great rest of your day!

Good morning GilbertColomy,

It sounds like you’re having some trouble with iMessage, and when sending a message to a contact you’re getting the error that the contact is invalid. I’ll be happy to help out with this.

First, let’s start with some basic troubleshooting. Open Messages > Preferences > Accounts and make sure you’re signed in with your Apple ID here. Also make sure under “You can be reached for messages at” your Apple ID is listed here. If not, then click “Add Email” and add your Apple ID. If these settings are correct, then try signing out of your Apple ID here and then sign back in.

If these settings are correct and you’re still having issues, let us know if it's only this contact that you're having issues with and if you have the same issue sending an iMessage to this same person on your iPhone.

Take care!
