Relationship between Dropbox & FCP 10.4

I received video, audio and stills to use in a FCP 10.4 project. I downloaded the media from Dropbox and then moved the uploads to my external hard drive. From there I uploaded to FCP 10.4. When I deleted the media from Dropbox, it was also deleted from my FCP project library. The media is still intact on the external hard drive. Why does FCP 10.4 believe Dropbox is the media source and continue to treat it as such. Why does Dropbox sync the media, even though I am not sharing the files with another FCP user and am the sole editor on a single device?

That makes some sense to me. I had no clue that the file I created in my external hard drive storage would remain tagged by Dropbox when I did a direct download from Dropbox and then dropped and dragged the downloaded files onto my external hard drive. I understand the whole concept of needing to leave my source media in place, and thought I had done so with the download / drop drag to the hard drive. I'll be very wary of using Dropbox as a means for receiving media in the future and, with your help, will keep problem solving this. Thanks!

Yes, I mean "import." When I imported, I clicked the import button, which opened my external hard dive file. I then highlighted the desired media file (stored on my external hard drive) and hit selected. They imported, no problem. The files are stored on an external hard drive in a folder connected with the project. I do not understand why FCP and Dropbox files are connected.
