iMac shutdown in Target Display Mode (macOS 10.13.4)

Hi! I am using iMac (21.5-inch, mid 2014, iMac14, 4) as an external display for MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, mid 2014). After upgrading to macOS 10.13.4 on both computers, the target display mode becomes unusable. Here is the problem scenario:

  • Connect iMac and MacBook with thunderbolt cable
  • Press Command+F2 on the iMac keyboard
  • iMac just shutdown. The display on MacBook Pro turns black, but it still works.
  • Disconnect the thunderbolt cable
  • iMac is off. Correct picture on MacBook Pro is back.

Is it known issue? What information can I collect to find root cause for this issue? Before upgrade all worked correctly.

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.4)

I'm having a very similar issue with my mid 2014 iMac 21.5 when using TDM to connect to a Mid 2014 Macbook Pro 15. Issues seems to have only appeared since upgrading to both to MacOS 10.13.4. i've reset both PRAM and the SMC on both systems with no luck. I'm going to continue to try to troubleshoot the issue. If I make any progress I will post a reply here.

This issue is unfortunate because I use TDM a lot for work. Apple really needs to correct this issue soon.

It says: Hardware failure - unknown - 128
The Kies software were used a long time ago for connecting my Samsung phone, I've taking it away now and I'll try again and see if it helps (haven't caused any problems earlier though...).
I'm using the TDM so I can have a monitor for my Mac mini. When pressing the cmd f2 it works for like 20 seconds and then the iMac shuts down (restarts).
Not the biggest problem in the world, but it's so annoying when knowing it worked up until the latest OS upgrade.
