all my folders and files have disappeared from the desktop

I am using Sierra operating system.

I haven't done anything different to earlier today but when I switched my MacBook Pro back on this evening EVERYTHING ON THE DESKTOP HAD DISAPPEARED. ALL THE FOLDERS, DOCUMENTS ETC.

I have tried logging out and restarting. I have tried turning off completely. I have searched finder etc.

Any ideas on where I can find and restore them.
