Audio stops on airpods

Hi there, is anyone else having issues where the airpods no longer transmits audio. For example, I'm listening to a podcast & the audio frequently just drops, the podcast is still playing just goes silent. The airpods still appear connect and the app needs to be restarted to get audio again. Really annoying, it might be more that just the airpods however that's where I notice it. This never happened prior to the most recent update to 11.3, never happened before.

iPhone 7, iOS 11.3

Solved! but it's a hassle...

After talking with Apple Support, we determined it's probably due to a faulty version of iOS on our phones. I restored my phone in recovery mode and then restored from a backup. AirPods+ iPhone have been working perfectly since then (24 hours!) with no audio stops or phone call audio issues.

Here are the steps I followed:

Backup

1. Backup your phone to iCloud and turn off find my iPhone.

2. Backup your phone to your computer using iTunes. (It'll restore faster from an iTunes backup plus horcruxing your phone is always a good idea.)

Restore

3. With your phone plugged into your computer and iTunes open, put the phone in recovery mode. On my iPhone 7, you hold down the sleep/wake button and the volume down button simultaneously until a "connect to iTunes" logo appears.

(enter recovery mode instructions for different iPhones: If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support)

4. iTunes will tell you "There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored." Follow the prompts to restore (not update) the iPhone. This step fully removes the faulty version of iOS on the phone and replaces it with a new copy that iTunes will download.

Setup from backup

5. After the restore is complete, set up your phone from one of the backups you made in steps 1 and 2. This step puts all your information and data back on the phone.

6. Once you've finished setting up your iPhone from the backup, try using AirPods. Hopefully the issue is resolved.

It's been 24 hours since I did this process and I have not had any problems with my AirPods since then. They're working just as well as they did before the iOS 11.3 update when this started happening all the time. It was to the point where audio would drop on nearly every track or podcast I played. Now they work normally again. It was a time consuming fix, but well worth it to get this unbearably annoying problem resolved. Hopefully it works for you guys too!

Shout out to Steve at Apple Support for the idea

One more update: Contacted apple customer support through their online chat, and after forgetting the airpods, reconnecting, and making sure I had the latest version of iOS they finally gave up and asked me to take both my phone and airpods into an apple store to be looked at.

I'll post another update once I've finished that to see what they say from the apple store, but from what people are saying here it still smells like an IOS 11.3 issue that needs to be fixed.

I also get sound glitches when connecting to other blue-tooth devices (like my car, or power-beats), but the sound always comes back after a few seconds in those cases. Airpods, it just doesn't come back at all.

Same here ,I even unpaired the AirPods in the Bluetooth lists before I did the update.I played about 5 songs on one album with only a couple of hesitations but the next album I have to disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth about 8 times ,if anything it got worse.During podcasts you can pause forward and back 15 seconds (or whatever your setting is) and then it play it will work again. However skipping tracks in music doesn’t fix issue.

Having the same problems described by others here - dropping sound while listening to Apple Music, garbled "underwater" sounds on call. Often seems to happen 30-60 seconds into the first song I listen to or a minute or so into a new phone call. Tried resetting phone and disconnecting/reconnecting Airpods but have not tried factory restore of the phone yet. I'm on an iPhone 7 with iOS 11.4 I can restore sound by taking both Airpods out and then putting them back in and restarting or by switching audio output to phone and then back to Airpods. It's very frustrating - I've started going back to my wired headset for important client calls because I can't trust the Airpods.

One more update from my end: I seem to see this happen more frequently when I have my iPhone 6s plugged in (charging). When it's just in my pocket I don't seem to see this as often (if at all), but the moment I plug my phone in to charge and it brings up the charging screen then shuts off the sound will disappear on the Air pods.

I notice that when I have my phone connected to my vehicle's blue-tooth I get a similar temporary glitch when the screen shuts off (no sound for a few moments), but it always comes back. Air pods it doesn't come back.

I have this feeling too. Many times it seems to happen after I touch my iPhone and then put it back down on the desk locking the screen. After a few seconds audio stops but the music is still playing and I realized I can still control playback using double taps on the earbuds. But it could also happen just like right now when I was having a walk, I touched my phone (like change the album to play) then lock screen and put in pocket. A few seconds later audio goes silent.

I managed to narrow It down two possibilities.

1) The AirPods are on some sort of always listening function so that it can hear a user say “Hey Siri” followed by the command. This kicks on more frequently when a EMS siren is on. “Hey Siri” never works so it can’t be that. I live in NYC so lots of Interfearing sounds seem to cause this to happen. Unless it’s just a conincidence of 2 and the environment sound stop hey airy from functioning correctly.

2) the data on the carrier network is so **** slow in the particular area you are that the audio streaming into your device is not buffering fast enough. I pay for unlimited data and it shouldn’t be capped as I don’t over use that much data. But still I greatly suspect this since carriers have the tech to make the data connection speed variable.
