How do I make the Finder and Mail sidebar wider and have it stay that way?

I want to make the sidebar wider in Mail and have it stay that way. I am not talking about the icon size or the font size but the actual width of the sidebar (so I can see the full name of my folders and mailboxes). I change it when I open a new window but every time I close and reopen it defaults to a ridiculously slim sidebar. Using High Sierra.

iMac, iOS 11.3

Generally if you expand the mail side bar column width and compose a new mail window ( command and N ) , compose a mail and send it , and quit the mail app the column size is saved until you manually change it .

To resolve it , enter in user library macOS Sierra: Library folder

Find a folder container > drag and drop a folder com.apple.mail to the desktop , restart the Mac and then open mail application .

This is a trial method if major issue is in the mail application delete the account and configure it once again Set up Mail on your Mac with email accounts - Apple Support

To find out what is cause of the issue use https://etrecheck.com/

And if interested post the results .
