mini DV camera not detected with High Sierra?

I've connected my Sony mini DV camera to my MacBook Pro running 10.13.4 with a firewire to Thunderbolt connector but it doesn't recognise my camcorder at all. I've tried Quicktime, iMovie and I've just downloaded a copy of Final Cut Pro X, but the base issue seems to be getting a signal from my camera into the MBP. Any ideas?

Mac mini not recoginizing camera via thunderbolt/fw in imovie. Can't import. I bought a thunderbolt to firewire adapter for my mac mini (late 2014) to be able to digitize/import video from my panasonic ag-dvx100a (mini dv tape). My mac is not recognizing camera.Thanks!
