I Merged Photo libraries with PowerPhotos. Why is the old source library still there?

I Merged two Photo libraries with PowerPhotos. Why is the old source library still there?

I merged one library into another library. Source library > Destination library (was existing)

I followed the advice from léonie given here.

Notes on Merging Photos Libraries

Not only is the old source library still there, but so are the photos contained in it. These images are technical in nature so I'm not 100% sure all of the images went into the destination library, I THINK the merge worked but I want to eliminate the old source library. But I'm nervous 😟 Because I expected the source library to "go away".

Power Photos is working like the old iPhoto Library Manager. It is creating a new merged library and is leaving the source libraries untouched.

Keep a copy of the originals libraries on external drive, so you can go back to the library, when you discover that items did not migrate correctly. You will need a copy the original library anyway, because merging with PowerPhotos is lossy. You can only move the edited versions or the originals to the other library, but not both of them as a pair. There is no other application, that could move the pair as an entity. Once you copied the library to an external drive, you can delete the library you merged into the other library. I have two external drives, where I archive the previous versions of other library - one drive for the archive and on drive as a backup copy of this archive.

Not only is the old source library still there, but so are the photos contained in it.

What do you mean? Are you seeing the photos in the Finder, outside the library? Did you import the photos as "referenced", meaning that you imported them with the option "Photos > Preferences > Importing: Copy items into the Photos Library" disabled? Then the merged library will also use the same referenced photos.

To see, if your photos have been copied into the merged library or not, open the library in Power Photos and select one of the photos you merged into the new library. Ctrl-click or right-click the photo and select "Show original file in Finder". Is the revealed photo inside the merged Photos Library or in a folder outside the library?

It is creating a new merged library

I was merging a small library into an existing library, not a new library.

and is leaving the source libraries untouched.

My goal in doing this merger was to simplify things and reduce the number of libraries I had. I want the images and metadata from the source library to go into the existing library, (I believe I accomplish this but I am confused because the old library is still there).

Keep a copy of the originals libraries on external drive, so you can go back to the library, when you discover that items did not migrate correctly.

I have Time Machine and other backups.

because merging with PowerPhotos is lossy.

I am unable to detect any loss. The images that were moved appear to be of the same size and quality that they had in the source library. None of these images have ever been edited in any way.

You can only move the edited versions or the originals to the other library, but not both of them as a pair.

The directions to PowerPhotos says that if there was no an edited version, the original image will be moved. I must assume that is what happened in my case.

Once you copied the library to an external drive, you can delete the library you merged into the other library.

Now we are getting into the meat of the subject. How do I delete a library? The library that I want to delete still has the images that I moved in it. ( Maybe they were COPIED to the destination library? )

Ctrl-click or right-click the photo and select "Show original file in Finder". Is the revealed photo inside the merged Photos Library or in a folder outside the library?

It looks to me like the original source image is in the Photos destination folder.

I think the merger worked. Perhaps my question is boiling down to the consequences of deleting the old source library.

It's deleted.

As a level X, I know that you have almost total control over this website.

It sure would be nice if the "Photos" had its own location, in a similar manner that iPhoto continues to have.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Without you, Apple would collapse overnight.

That is fine then. If you did not edit any photos, or named faces or added locations, or created project.

I have been referring to the limitations as described here: https://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/Docs/copying_limitations.html
