iPhone X proximity sensor always on?

I love the new iPhone X, but it’s becoming very annoying that every time my finger moves past the proximity sensor, the screen goes black. I get that this function is important during a phone call, but even while writing this question out, it’s happened a few times. Also happens during internet viewing, and so on. Is this normal? Sounds like a bug to me...
