MacBook Pro screen flickering solution

Hello. Has anyone had random screen flickering running High Sierra10.13.4? This is a new issue that started last weekend and its now continuing. Only change to configuration was installing Office 2016 a few days before flickering started. Sometimes after opening the cover I am getting a pink screen before it loads the wallpaper...

So, my situation has gone from bad-to-worse.

Now, the MacBook Pro won’t play iTunes videos/movies anymore. All-black screen, nothing.

Reset both NVRAM and SMC.

Safe Mode.

New User Account.

Sign-out/in to iTunes.

De-authorize/Re-Authorize.

Nothing.

Anecdotally, it won’t play anything from iTunes, Netflix, Amazon, or even YouTube movies. Nothing. It’s anything that is DRM/copy protected. Works fine on old MacBook, iMac, etc., and this was a replacement MacBook Pro.

I’m beginning to think this is failing hardware, and this machine isn’t even three weeks old. -shrug-

I'm running High Sierra 10.13.5 on a 15" 2017 MacBook Pro with the AMD Radeon Pro 560. I'm running external displays, but it also does this on the internal display when nothing else is connected. I'm always using the 560, rather than the integrated GPU.

Several times a day or more, I get an uneven horizontal line that flashes on the screen. I haven't been able to pin down the cause and doesn't appear to be app-specific. Sometimes the frequency increases. Maybe a driver bug? Hopefully not related to the GPU issues that Apple had with the 2011 MacBook Pros.

Is anybody experiencing anything similar?

It appears as though every situation is different and the common denominator is High Sierra 10.13.5. My previous comment: "After spending a whole day on this issue and several hours with tech support, I had to reinstall OS 10.13.5. I was told it was probably an install issue. Of course reinstall is a couple hours. Still no fix. Deciding not to call again, I reinstalled 10.13.4 from a backup. I lost a month’s work. I hope to try again, but not anytime soon." I will now backup more often.

Hi!

Wondering if yours got fixed? I went to Apple store for them to have a look at my MBP and of course my MBP didn't act up that time so they didn't want to take my laptop. When I got home and open the lid, it happened again. It happens randomly and because this laptop is not cheap, I am worried. Let me know if you were able to have yours fixed. I read a lot because of this issue and people are really frustrated because it seems like Apple has done nothing to resolve it.

No problem. It's not the answer anyone probably wants but it's an answer nonetheless. I asked if there were any workarounds, none they were aware of. I asked if there was any timeframe for when to expect a fix, none they were aware of. The last person I spoke to, despite being extremely apologetic, said he had to call someone else back for the very same issue so it's likely (but not definite) we'll see some sort of fix.

I'm going to give it another week or so and then start looking at alternatives, maybe trade it in for a surface tablet book.

I had a 2016 Macbook Pro, the one that was the 2.7. I had it for about 9 months before the flickering started. I sent it into Apple Repair 3 different times. They claimed they could never get it to reproduce. The funny thing is the day I got it back the problem started. I turned around and took it back to Apple. Finally after 3 months of dealing with Apple and the flickering problem, I convinced them to swap out the computer. I get my new computer, set it up, and then about 1 hour after use it started again. The only way that I got it to go away was to restart my computer.

At this point I am not sure what it is. I have not downloaded anything on this computer and have not used any third party programs. I think the problem has to do more with interference than anything. When the flickering was happening and I would stand up, the flickering would stop for about 30 seconds, then restart. I think Apple needs to do some major back investigation on this matter.

I have this problem also and did a search on it. I found a tech article stating this is definitely a hardware issue...a flaw. Also that Apple so far isn't issuing a recall, and if they do, it'll likely take years for them to do so. I don't have the link to the article, but it was a top return when I googled, "why is my Macbook Pro's screen flickering?".

Same issue. I reported in Bug Reporter with sysdiagnose and some videos. No-one answer about the issue, no-one clarification if it is an hardware issue or a software issue. Really bad support with us about a know issue. Are they waiting for a post in some Apple dedicated blog to say something?

So I have the MacBook Pro 15 2017 and I randomly experience the screen flickering from wake. My flicking is screen going off and on.

Now I only seem to notice this when it's not plugged to the power. I used have to restart the system to fix it. But I think the problem for at least my flickering is the 2 video cards. So what I do to stop the flickering (while it's flickering) is to go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Then Un-Check "Automatic Graphics Switching" and flickering immediately stops. At this point you can re-check that option again. The next time it happens I'll make a video of it and post it.

New MacBook bought 8/17 no problems, then flickering screen started happening, started after the update the end of 3/18, took many videos of it. Took it in, first they replaced the top of computer, did a wipe and restore.... happened again...then they replaced the bottom and said to call software mgr. next. Googled online, found this: go to >system preferences>energy saver>(turn off-uncheck) automatic graphics switching. I did that 11 days ago and hasn't happened again. Read that some apple software mgr. said there will be an update fix, but not until 2/19????? Crazy. Will see if this has fixed it, but was happening every other day/every day and hasn't since I turned off auto graphics switching.

I would keep bothering them to see if they can sort this out for you. Disabling automatic switching keeps the discrete GPU active all the time which drastically reduces battery life. They usually last from 8-9 hours with the integrated GPU and about 3-4 with the discrete. If the glitches aren’t present with the Radeon Pro, perhaps the integrated GPU in the core i7 CPU is faulty.

I bought my 15” back in 11/2016 and I’ve never experienced any problems with it. There’s no reason for you to have any either after spending a good amount of money on it.

Good news (maybe). I just received a follow up on Bug Reporter after that I sent a video with the issue and also a sysdiagnose. The support said that:

The original report on this issue is closed as resolved in macOS 10.14 beta 4. If you still see the issue in that or a newer release, please file a new bug report.

So at now our bug would be solved. Let will see!
