I’m sure it should be simple, but I keep being given a dozen options, none of which seem to lead to chatting with an actual human.

Apple Support by e-mail or chat Select your device, Battery, Power and Charging, then Power adapter not working to get a chat option. If you need to talk to them, ask them if they will do a Skype or FaceTime with you.

That is probably why the system is set up for self-help and online assistance rather than everything being done by chat or phone calls. Even if you do try to bypass an online support option by going to a different topic (such as talking about Apple ID with a battery service person) which does offer chat or phone call I am not sure if you'll end up with somebody who knows about your topic. If you have done this then post back and let us know if it worked.
