HELP! iphoto nor itunes recognizes my iphone

When I plug iPhone into my Mac I get the following pop-up from iTunes-"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone” because an error occurred while reading from the device."

And I get the following pop-up message from iPhoto-"Photos in the camera roll on iPhone cannot be viewed or imported because the iPhone is locked with a passcode."

I upgraded my iphone to the latest version 11.2.6 and never lock my iphone with a passcode when on my computer and I can't seem to get a connection. Iv'e restarted all of the above and it still won't recognize my iPhone. I looked at my Mac information and under USB heading can see iphone 6.01connected. I have been able to get iPhoto to recognize my iPhone sometimes using Google Picasa in the background. Is there any hope of getting my iPhone to connect to my computer with out upgrading again, for fear of loosing all connectivity?

Mac Pro version: OS 10.6.8

iPhone version: 11.2.6

iTunes version:11.4

iPhoto version: 11 9.2.3

Get the latest version of iTunes - https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201352

A phone with 11.2.6 is going to need iTunes 12.something at least, but a MacPro with only OSX 10.6.8 is going to need serious updating in order to run the newest iTunes, if at all possible.

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - https://support.apple.com/HT206886 - "OS X El Capitan remains available for Mac computers that can't upgrade to macOS Sierra, or that need to upgrade to El Capitan first."

If your Mac is not Compatible with Sierra but you Have Not Upgraded to El Capitan - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10692
