The exported video has random artifacts like this:
These artefacts appeared in the exported video. When in a preview mode, no artifacts are there. The video is a slideshow made from still images only.
I tried different options of export to file, no improvements.
MacMini 2011, CPU i5/16 RAM/SSD, latest iMovie, High Sierra.
Any suggestions?

First, I delete iMovie preferences as you suggested. This didn't change the situation.
Then I decreased dimensions of source images in 4 times. And this helped!
Original dimensions were 3632 × 5456. Size - 5.6 Mb each file. New dimensions are 908 × 1364 which are good enough for my home video.

Have you tried opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and then selecting to delete preferences from the box that appears? Sometimes that cures glitches.
The issue might be confined to one project. Try copying your media from this project into a newly created project and see if you can share out successfully.
You could also try converting the photos to JPEG, plus lowering the resolution -- particularly if these are HEIF formatted photos from iPhone 7 or later.
