Mac OS 10.13.4 hangs on reboot or shutdown

Hello,

My Mac Mini (late 2014) on 10.13.4 hangs on reboot or shutdown. The screen turns black and nothing happens, the machine doesn't reboot nor power down. From time to time apps hang as well. Mainly the Finder and when ejecting disk copies. Other apps hanging are Filezilla, iTunes. I did a clean install, but the problem persists.

In the console I see a constant error message from com.apple.Skylight, saying 'Invalid Connection ID 0'. I believe this has to do with the windows management or something similar? Could this prevent the system from shutting down?

It is very annoying. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, as I can reboot and shutdown via Windows (bootcamp). It turns using my Mac under Mac OS, after years of working just fine, into an annoying ride.

Does anyone have clues?

Kind regards from Holland

Hello marrotijn,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems you are having issues with restarting or shutting down your Mac. To help with this issue, use safe mode to start up your Mac as it does the following things:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

If you're still having this issue, try testing for this issue in another user account to see if the problem persists. You can find more information on how to create a test user account below.

Thanks both. Apparently the issues with shutting down or rebooting the system have gone with a check via another account and subsequently doing a check of the file system in safe mode. The second tip helps to indeed get rid of the error message.

Don't know if it helps, but I deleted all my 32 bit software as well... Got a message it might affect system performance.

Cheers.

In regards to Console error messages com.apple. SkyLight. This has been reported to Apple and is now known to them. Yes, it seems related to the rewrite of Metal 2 for the added eGPU support in 10.13.4. To get rid of the error messages ( temporary fix until next reboot ) try this

With No Applications active>> Desktop>> GO>> Utilities and look for Activity Monitor. Open Activity Monitor. In top Right of Activity Monitor type signpost_notificationd. In main screen of Activity Monitor you should see signpost_notificationd. Click on that process until it is hi-lited. In Top Left of Activity Monitor look for First Icon that looks like a large X >> that should be Force Quit. Although you try to Force Quit it will not.

If you are successful, quit Activity Monitor and Open Console. Let it run 1 - 2 minutes. If all goes well all those Error messages related to Signpost_notificationd will have ceased ( only until the next reboot )

Good luck
