Length of the search bar is set by default.

At present there is no preference option available for lengthening the search field.

There are options available for viewing the full address.

Show address in full in the search field

1. Safari > Preferences > Advances > Smart search field > Show full website address

Enable it.

2. Click inside the Smart Search Field to reveal the full address.

3. Click “View” in the Safari menu bar and choose “Show Tab Bar”.

Tab heading will show the full address.

If you widen the width of the Safari window, the search field/url address box will lengthen accordingly.

Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Smart search field

Enabling it will show the full address, but for extremely long address, part will be hidden.

I usually open a TextEdit page and copy and paste the address to view it in full .

Few versions back, in Safari a user could enable Show Status Bar.

Safari > View > Show Status Bar

A dedicated always present Status Bar will appear at the bottom of the window showing the path and the full address.

Apple changed that functionality.

Now i instead of an always present Status Bar, a line will popup showing url of an embedded hyperlink

at bottom left corner.

I don't know any terminal command to change the default preference setup.
