About the “Encode Selected Video Files” feature in Finder from the contextual menu: -

It seems the issue is, that there is no feedback to the user about the progress (percentage stays at 0%), even though the conversion is happening and will finish in the background. You just won’t know it until the process is completed.

I do get to see the spinning gear icon in the menu bar, but (when clicking for more details) the percentage stays at 0% for me as well, and the new .m4v/.mov file stays at 0 bytes, until conversion is finished (then it shows briefly 100%). [You can also see that it is still working, by looking for the relatively high CPU load in Activity Monitor by process VTEncoderXPCService.]

Hello and welcome..!

While I see certain words that are recognizable, online translate was used to deduce more detail.

"...Use quicktime to turn mov into mp4 to show that the progress is always 0
...I want to use quicktime to turn mov into mp4...

But using the function of right-clicking "encode the selected video", the progress bar in the upper

right corner of the progress of the encoding shows the completion progress 0. Why is this happening?.."

This seems like a forward enough issue and some answers appear; not that I'm any expert

though did a search (duckduckgo) and found some results that may include a few answers.

You may need to use a converter application such as some that appear in App store free.

An older ASC discussions article says several things about converting and quality/loss.

I WANT TO CONVERT A .MOV MOVIE TO AN MP4 VIDEO ??

There is a VLC software that may still work to convert various file types. Sometimes re-name of

file could automatically change file attributes so the QuickTime player may see them differently.

QuickTime Player converts certain files ... - Apple Support

In OS X Mavericks and later, QuickTime Player (version 10) converts files that use certain older

or third-party media formats. A window with a progress bar shows that the file is converting.

• If an audio or video file doesn't play on Mac - Apple Support

QuickTime uses Apple ProRes to convert legacy formats used in video workflows, such as those

encoded with Animation codec. It uses H.264 to convert other older or third-party media formats.

About Apple ProRes - Apple Support

There is a different codec for iOS versions of .mov and mp4 conversions, than Mac & PC versions.

..Sorry to not be of exacting help in this matter..
