NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB and High Sierra

I have had such good performance out of my iMac (27-inch, Late 2012); 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB. But, after upgrading to High Sierra I have had odd things occur, such as messages suddenly not working, some email not working, finder stops responding, over all slowness. Some of these issues tend to go away some after shutting down and restarting, however eventually return. Is it the Graphics card and do I need to update it's drivers and where and how do I go about that if that is indeed the issue. Thanks for any help that can be offered. It seems to be getting worse over time. I am presently using 10.13.4

I have tried rebooting as I said above, scanned for virus, searched the internet for solutions...nothing has worked.

EtreCheck version: 4.2.1 (4C015)

Report generated: 2018-04-14 10:51:25

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 5:23

Performance: Below Average

Problem: Other problem

Description:

I have 3 emails. Often gmail will not work until I restart, but the bigger issues are slowness, finder not responding and messages working not working, until I shut down and reboot. Just overall weirdness that wasn’t there before. I had been using ClamXVA that was recommended…maybe that is the issue.

Major Issues: None

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Apps hanging- There have been numerous app hangs.

Clean up- There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files- There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications- There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Low performance- EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

32-bit Apps- This machine has 32-bits apps that may have problems in the future.

Thank you, Karen!

ClamX is running in the background. Use System Preferences > Accounts > {your account} > Login Items tab to remove it from those things that automatically launch every time your start the computer. You can still run it manually if you really think you need it. My humble opinion--you don't need any anti-virus protection other than OSX itself.

I believe Magic Menu is one of the system modifications that Etrecheck is reporting. Those are always suspect.

I'm not sure what ZipCloud does but, if it is an offsite backup scheme, those can cause stalls. Also Etrecheck is having trouble fully identifying it and the dates show it 5-6 years old. Old software can be a problem if it was never updated for changes in new versions of the Mac OS. Other than iCloud, the only backup scheme I've used that doesn't not slow me down is DropBox.

For most people 8GB RAM is adequate but you appear to be running Creative Suite, a very demanding packages of tools. The diagnostics show parts of it are crashing. Consider increasing RAM to 16GB. You have two empty slots that can be used without removing the existing RAM. I am only comfortable with Mac RAM rom Crucial or Other World Computing (macsales.com).

I see two WD My Book external drives. I've had trouble with those. The drives inside are fine but their enclosures give me no joy. I have one that was always sluggish to activate and stalled the computer regularly. It mattered not if I used their USB or FireWire ports--they were not good. I removed the drive from inside and installed it in a Mercury Elite Pro enclosure. That fixed all the issues I had with the MyBook. The stripped MyBook enclosure has now received an all expense-paid trip to the recycler. The drive that lived inside works happily and transparently in its new home.

I know replacing external drives is not a shopping trip that is cheap so, to test, disconnect the externals, restart and run for a few hours without them. See if things get better.

Awesome help. I don't know what that ZipCloud is either. Here is a screenshot of what it said. I will do all you have suggested. I haven't had any issues with the externals up until recently. I sort of think your initial ideas of the Magic Menu (not sure that that is), and the ClamX. I have turned those off in Log ins and will look at more RAM. This machine was so fast for so long and it only recently began to show problems. So, I am thinking ClamX could very well be it. I give it a few days and let you know how it goes.

None of the symptoms you describe suggest anything wrong with the graphics hardware which, in your model isn't a separate "card" but rather integral with and soldered to the logic board. Any driver updates are alwasys pushed out through teh App Sotre's Software update function.

To me this sounds more likely that you have a conflict with some third-party software whose developer did not react to 10.3.4. This alone could be the problem:

...scanned for virus,...

ANY virus scanner will make your Mac run badly. The macOS takes care of itself quite well without the useless products of scammers getting in your way.

The fastest way to diagnose this via these forums is to post a snapshot of your system configuration. Fortunately there is a safe and secure way to do that.

A respected and long-serving member of these communities has created a simple utility that will take that "snapshot" of your configuration without revealing any sensitive information about you and your computer. It only runs when you tell it to, not in the background, and therefore creates no performance penalties. It is Etrecheck, and is available here:

http://etrecheck.com/

Run it and, when its results display, select "Report" from the left-hand pane (scroll down), then click Etrecheck's "Share Report" icon followed by "Copy Report" from the resulting dropdown. Paste the entire report into a response to your own thread here. It will often allow us to quickly identify or eliminate software as the problem.
