How do I quit Presentation Mode with an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.13.4 with an external monitor connected. In the past when I would connect the monitor I would be ask if I wanted to activate Presentation Mode. So recently I tried it just to see what it is all about and now I found I really do not want to use that feature. My problem is I cannot find a way to turn off Presentation Mode. Hope you can help this poor computer novice. Thanks.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 251 GB Flash Storage internal drive

Good morning Rayintheburg!

It sounds like you entered presentation mode and are having trouble exiting it. I’ll be happy to help out.

Here’s a great resource about using presentation mode on a separate display: Keynote for Mac: Play a presentation on a separate display

You can press Esc (Escape) to exit presentation mode. Does that work for you? Let us know.

Cheers!

Joseph,

I have been corresponding with a Senior Advisor at AppleCare who passed this problem on to Apple engineering and the following is the results received from that advisor.

I heard back from engineering.

They are telling this is an issue with parallels

I included the web link above that they also found where other users are having the same issue.

They are suggesting that you call their support.

Weeks went by before coming to this result. I have not yet been able to connect with Parallels, but hope to do so soon.

Thank you for your efforts in this matter.

Joseph_S,

Pressing the Esc. key does nothing. I'm pretty sure Keynote was not involved in the problem since I have never used that app. So I found Keynote in my app folder so I could try some of the suggestions that were in the resource you provided, but could not find the things in the toolbar that I should try. For example, the black triangle that points to the right that should be in the toolbar wasn't there. Let me call AppleCare to see what they have to say and I'll let you know if they can solve the mystery. I'll get back to you.
